Dear Brothers & Sisters,
I hope this message finds you safe and in good health. While the commencement of spring is traditionally a time of rebirth and great celebration, we find ourselves today facing challenges and changes to our daily lives as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. This is no doubt an unprecedented time, and while we remain cautious, we should also be optimistic about the year ahead.
During times of uncertainty I find strength in reflecting upon our common heritage, and the challenges those who came before us endured and triumphed over. One such example is Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Today marks the 199th anniversary of Greece’s independence. After nearly 400 years of oppression and hardship, the Greeks came together to fight for their freedom. “Freedom or Death” became the motto for the revolution, as the nation fought to rightfully reclaim their homeland.
As we reflect on this historic day, let us pay our respects and honor our ancestors by remembering their sacrifices and carrying on the traditions and heritage that they helped preserve. Staying actively involved in the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America “Icaros” is one such way that we can ensure our strong Icarian heritage and traditions thrive for generations to come.
Chapter Meetings & Technology
I firmly believe personal interaction is an important factor in staying healthy, both in mind and spirit. While social distancing has impacted our ability to gather for chapter events and festivities, utilizing technological advancements (Facetime, Skype, etc..) is how we can still remain directly connected and support each other.
I encourage each of us to routinely reach out to fellow members to see how they are doing during this difficult time. If possible, teach our elderly or those who are not technologically advanced, how they too can remain connected through video capabilities. Simple steps can result in great comfort and support as we wait for this outbreak to end. We should also use this time to bond and learn more about our strong Ikarian heritage. I personally have enjoyed learning more about the life my father and grandparents lived while growing up on Ikaria.
A strong membership base has been a key element in the success of the Brotherhood. While most chapter events have been postponed, I wanted to remind everyone that individual and chapter memberships can be paid quickly and easily through the Brotherhood’s website (https://pan-icarian.com/membership/). This electronic feature, is just one of the many benefits our website has to offer!
Submissions for the next edition of Ikaria Magazine are due on April 1 st . While we understand the current outbreak has impacted chapter gatherings, we ask that you provide submissions as soon as possible, so publication is not delayed. Ikaria Magazine is yet another way the Brotherhood stays connected, and I look forward to reading about each chapter’s news and updates.
Submissions for Ikaria Magazine’s next edition should be submitted to our magazine editor at firstname.lastname@example.org. Additionally, past editions can be viewed on our website.
In closing, I wanted to thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood. While we adjust our daily lives in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, I pray that you and your family remain safe. Please remember that we are in this together and that the Brotherhood is committed to helping in all ways possible.
